What is the difference between a primary and contingent beneficiary?
Updated over a week ago

Primary beneficiaries are the individuals or entities first in line to inherit the account assets. Should the individuals or entities listed as primary beneficiaries predecease the account owner, the assets will then be divided on a pro rata basis to the remaining primary beneficiaries.

If all of the primary beneficiaries predecease the account owner, the contingent beneficiaries will then be in line to inherit the account assets.

Should all listed beneficiaries predecease the account owner or if no beneficiaries are listed, the assets will be paid to the account owner’s estate.
